About (CRCST)
The Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)/ Sterile Processing Technician program is designed to prepare students to function as a sterile processing professional in multiple healthcare settings. Sterile Processing technicians perform and participate in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment.

Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) Certification (The exam is administered online.)

In addition to passing the certification exam, candidates must document 400 hours of hands-on experience either in the 5 years preceding the application OR within 6 months after passing the certification exam (Provisional Certification).

Duties of (CRCST)

Decontamination and inspection: Manually cleaning and disinfecting used instruments and equipment to remove contaminants before they are sterilized. They meticulously inspect items to ensure they are clean, complete, and in good working order.

Preparation and packaging: Assembling instruments into correct trays and packaging them for sterilization using appropriate methods and labeling techniques.

Sterilization: Operating and monitoring sterilization equipment, such as autoclaves, to ensure all items are properly sterilized and safe for patient use.

Inventory management: Receiving, storing, and distributing medical supplies and equipment. They also track inventory levels, reorder supplies as needed, and check expiration dates.

Quality assurance and record-keeping: Performing quality control tests on equipment, maintaining records of sterilization procedures, and documenting all activities to comply with regulations and standards.

Waste disposal: Removing and properly disposing of medical waste.

Maintenance and troubleshooting: Identifying and reporting any problems with equipment to supervisors or surgeons and requesting necessary repairs or replacements.

Safety protocols: Adhering to strict safety protocols and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while handling contaminated materials.
